Sometimes as a new parent it feels like your baby never sleeps when you want them to!
My first son took forever to settle at night time; I remember my exercise ball was my best friend. I would bounce endlessly which eventually would lull him into a sleep. I was getting up a minimum 3 times a night to feed and then put him back down. There would be nights where he was wide awake at 4 am with a huge grin on his face, wanting to socialize. It was a roller coaster when it came to getting enough rest. We would have a couple weeks of decent sleep stretches and then a milestone hit and threw off the sleep again.
With my second son it was a bit different. I remember him being so simple to put down at night time. I had established a night time routine with a bath, change into his sleeper, swaddle, lullaby, and feed. At 2 months he was sleeping through the night for about 9 hour stretches; Jackpot!!! Then we went on holidays at 3 months... When we came back sleeping through the night was officially over and we were waking every 2 to 3 hours during the night.
Swaddling was a saving grace for me during the first three months or until they could get themselves out of the swaddle. I learned some helpful techniques from Dr. Harvey Karp's The Happiest Baby on the Block. Swaddling helps with the startle reflex which will always wake the baby up and then you have to start all over again.
No matter what tips, tricks, or methods you choose to get your baby to sleep make sure to follow the safe sleep guidelines which are outlined by Alberta Health Services.
